De onbetrouwbare verteller in games

This illustration accompanied Pim van den Berg’s article on the game Telling Lies.
I based this illustration on the concept of the game, parts of the illustration were inspired by a classic movie mentioned in the article.
(hint: the movie too deals with the unreliable narrator(s) and human pride and manipulation.)
I also made additional illustrations to further show how the camera and our screens (phones, computers, etc) might not reflect the truth, or only part of it.

I was asked to illustrate a spread for Nuri Bilge Ceylan's movie The Wild Pear Tree (Ahlat Agaci) for the Dutch film magazine de Filmkrant.
The illustration was publicised along with Joost Broeren-Huitinga's article about Nuri Bilge Ceylan's movies and their themes.

I can recommend the movie to all, and perhaps if you've seen it, my illustration will make more sense to you. I tried to visualise the atmosphere and the main character's frustration somewhat.

All elements in this illustration I have based on scenes and elements one can find in the movie.

the original image stretches even further, but it is only the continuation of ground and clouds you are now missing out on.
as you can see, I purposely added empty spaces of background and calm space. I feel this fit the movie, which, while full, felt quite spaced and had a calm tempo for the audience to slowly soak in the story and atmosphere.
this also helped give the editors space to tweak the lay-out as they pleased.

I was asked to make the cover image for the first Filmkrant after the covid19 hiatus.
This was the first magazine cover I have drawn and I’m proud it was for a cultural magazine that I enjoy working for.
